Class Attire

Class Attire & Requirements 2016.17

Purpose – The dress code and hair requirement is an extremely important tool for the correct development of technique and assists in preventing injuries. When the teacher can view the dancer’s body clearly, they are able to make subtle adjustments that may eliminate future problems and help avoid injuries.

Hair For all ages and all dance disciplines, except Hip-Hop and Acro, students must have their hair pinned back off their face and well-secured in a bun. Please see handout on “How to Make a Perfect Bun”. If you do not have enough hair for a bun please speak to your teacher as to their suggestion for your hair. For Acro and Hip Hop, all students must have their hair secured off their face in a ponytail, braid or bun.

*Please Note:

(1) When purchasing any new shoes please check with your teacher before wearing them. All dance shoes should be purchased from a proper dance supply store or outlet. Hip Hop sneakers can be purchased from any store as long as they are solid white.

(2) If there is an item listed as a possible requirement for the performance, your teacher will let you know in the Spring once costumes and accessories are selected for the performance.

(3) Students should keep extra dancewear and hair supplies in their dance bag at all times.

(4) Students must wear appropriate clothing overtop of their dance gear when traveling to and from the studio.

(5) Students who do not have their hair properly secured or adequate dance wear may be asked to sit out that class.

(6) Dance shoes must NEVER be worn outside (including runners).

(7) Ballet tights must be free of holes or significant runs.

(8) Tights must be worn under any shorts that are shorter than mid-thigh.

(9) Black is the required color for all bodysuits, leggings, pants and shorts for tap, modern, jazz, lyrical and acro. No other colors or patterns will be permitted in class, unless that dancer is coming to class directly from a Ballet class where another body suit is required and then it is recommended they wear a black tank top overtop

(10) Ballet bodysuits and tights will not be permitted in Hip Hop without baggier clothing overtop. This is important to achieve the correct look in a dancer’s movement quality.

A note about “nude” suits: If your child’s costume for the year end show is light in color and they are not comfortable wearing it without undergarments underneath, you may want to consider purchasing a nude-colored bodysuit to go underneath as colored bodysuits will not be permitted. Nude colored straps only (not clear ones).

Possible Requirements for Performances:

Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Acro, Hip Hop — A plain black body suit (no extra straps or embellishments) and Mondor “Caramel” colored convertible or footless dance tights may be required for performance.

Thank you for your cooperation with these standards.
